Dalcroze: Principios y Aplicaciones para la Enseñanza Suzuki, Presentado por Jared Ballance
Dalcroze education is a playful, invigorating experience that awakens musicality and develops musicianship through rhythmic movement, ear-training, and improvisation. This three-pronged approach is equally engaging and useful for very young children, conservatory music students, adult musicians and senior citizens. Requiring complete involvement from each participant, it transcends purely musical pursuits, developing general cognitive areas such as attention, concentration, memory, coordination, self-control, sensitivity, and social integration. In a Dalcroze class you begin to feel and express the meaning of music through your physical movement, experiencing the flow of motion and emotion communicated through music kinesthetically in your body. Developed more than a century ago by Swiss musician and educator Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, the benefits of this approach have subsequently been scientifically confirmed.
This five-hour workshop will give you a personal experience of Dalcroze education through Eurhythmics and Solfege classes, learning some of the fundamental principles on which Dalcroze education is based through personal experience. We will then explore concrete ways you can apply these principles and activities in your teaching in both individual lessons and group classes. Some particpants will have the opportunity to practice leading a Dalcroze activity, preparing you to use that activity with your students.
The activities and skills addressed in the workshop are equally applicable to all instruments. We will use our bodies and voices, so you will not need to bring your instrument.

Online location: A zoom link will be sent to attendees before the workshop
If you switch from online to in-person or vice versa please let us know. There will be a 15 – person limit for in-person attendance, and 20 – person limit for online attendance. If fewer than 5 people sign up for in-person attendance, or Covid protocols change, we will move the class to be all online. In-person attendees will be required to wear masks and will need to show proof of a negative Covid test or proof of vaccination, in accordance with Washington mandates.

About Jared Ballance
Jared Ballance is a dedicated teacher in many fields. He has studied, performed, and taught extensively on five instruments, and holds performance and pedagogy degrees from Cleveland Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music, plus the internationally recognized Dalcroze License from Carnegie Mellon University and the Dalcroze Certificate from Juilliard. He studied cello with Richard Aaron, Desmond Hoebig, and Alan Harris, viola with Jeffery Irvine, and did additional studies in violin, piano, and viola da gamba. He has performed chamber music with members of the Cleveland Orchestra, was the cellist of the Samford String Quartet and the Brandywine Trio, and currently performs as a member of the Ballance Duo.
Dr. Ballance has taught Dalcroze workshops at Eastman, ENCORE, Hochstein School of Music and Dance, and Oakwood University for adult professional musicians, graduate and undergraduate performance majors, professors, music education, music theory, and general education students, as well as teenagers and children. He is a trained Suzuki teacher and teaches with his wife in Renton, Washington.
